What is the ‘Knowledge Platform’?

Immagine piattaformaIn Italy there are a large number of projects, cofunded by the European Commission within different Programmes and initiatives that have successfully tested environmental solutions, techniques, methods and approaches. They have enriched the knowledge base of the environmental issues and contributed to the implementation as well as further development of the related EU policies and legislation. Considering the large number of excellent projects in the environmental field (Waste, Resource efficiency, Soil protection, Air pollution, Environment and Health, Chemicals, Climate change adaptation and mitigation) it was considered necessary to make a strategic and pragmatic choice aimed at systematizing all the best environmental and climate practices to enhance and capitalize their experiences at the national level.

The so-called "Knowledge Platform" is an innovative tool implemented by the Italian Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea with the support of EU funds (European Regional Development Fund - ERDF) aimed at sharing best practice for environmentale protection and climate action.

The Knowledge Platform was developed to collect and share solutions that have proven to be best practices, examples of successful innovations, such as procedures, techniques and methodologies that have been successfully tested by projects that have impressed a real improvement on the management of complex environmental problems or in fighting the effects of climate change.

To whom it is addressed?

The Platform was set up with the objective to share best practices and to stimulate networking activities between the best practices’ developers and all those who are willing to replicate these actions. The Platform is addressed to all public and private entities that plan to invest in the environment, providing them with methods, techniques and models that have already been successfully tested in Italy.

What does it contain?

The “Knowledge Platform” contains more than one hundred technical files on solutions for environment protection that are considered best practices. The best practices collected within the Platform has been developed within the frame of several projects financed in Italy by EU Programs such as LIFE, Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), CIP Eco-innovation, CIP IEE, FP7 and Horizon 2020 that have provided financing in the field of the protection of the environment and the climate action.

For each project the Knowledge Platform gives a technical file that describes actions and results achieved. Within the technical file are available for downloading useful documents (Guidelines, Handbooks, Plans, Software tools, etc.) of projects where is describe the "modus operandi" of the tested solution. These technical files are useful working tools for those that are interested in replicating the best practices collected in the Platform.

Furthermore, the web site features a section on national and EU environmental legislation, and one on funding programmes that provide grants for environmental and climate-related actions. The platform will moreover allow visitors to stay up-to-date about the latest environmental technologies in key areas.

What is the aim?

The Platform was developed to collect and share solutions that have proven to be best practices, examples of efficient innovations, procedures, techniques and methodologies that have been successfully tested by projects that have made a real improvement in the management of complex environmental problems or the effects of climate change.
To these technical information are recognized as playing a key role in environmental protection in strengthening the skills and for increasing the awareness of public actors such as park authorities, technical offices of central and regional public administrations, which are called to play an important role in environmental governance or in the fight against climate change.

Similarly, the dissemination of best practices can also be of interest to the production world and the Platform could meet the needs of the small and medium-sized enterprises concerned to implement eco-innovative solutions in a given sector.

The Knowledge Platform is focusing on:

  • Complementarity: to make effective the optimal use of EU funds and financing, in the areas of environmental protection and climate change adaptation and mitigation, by maximizing the impact and efficiency of EU public funding through directly and indirectly managed programs and avoiding the risk of double funding.
  • Synergy: avoiding that investments are for its own sake and vice-versa they may have a greater impact and sustainability over time.
  • Sharing: thanks to the technical knowledge and tools produced by projects present within the Platform, those who intend to carry out environmental protection measures are not obliged to start fresh. By using the experience and technical skills of those who developed the good practice, they are able to avoid initial mistakes and to achieve more effectively final goal.
  • Suggest active funding and financial instruments for implementing the good practice.
  • Networking: foster networking with existing thematic networks and platforms.
  • Inform: to raise the level of attention of the general public to the existence of several solutions in Italy in the field of sustainability and to avoid the Environment being seen as a problem rather than an opportunity.
  • Inspire legislation updates.
  • Promote public-private partnerships.
