Water

Surface water and groundwater represent renewable resources. However, in order to secure a good condition for groundwater it is necessary to intervene promptly and foresee a plan of long period and stable protection measures, due to varying timescales associated with the natural formation and replenishment of these waters. The objective is to get a good state of water at each catchment level, so that it would be possible to coordinate the measures required for both surface and groundwater belonging to the same ecological, hydrological and hydrogeological cathcment area. In relation to the prevention and reduction of pollution, the european water policy is inspired by an integrated approach which reduces pollution at source, by establishing standards thresholds for the emissions and regulatory environmental quality. This policy is implemented through the European Directive 2000/60/CE which establishes the regulatory framework for the protection of inland surface water, transitional water, coastal and groundwater.
