Urban environment
In cities the effects of the urban environment are now clear and have different impacts: environmental, social and economic. Amongst other challenges to face in order to improve the environment it is important to find a balance between population density and compactness on one side, and quality of life in a healthy urban environment on the other one. The most important problems are: poor air quality, noise pollution, green house gases (GHGs), reduced water resources and waste management. Italy, in line with the 2020 European Strategy, recognises an important cross cutting role of urban environmental policies towards the sustainable development of cities.
